First Place Students and Faculty Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr's Birthday

We celebrated Martin Luther King Day on Friday, January 13th in the afternoon. Each year our birthday celebration in honor of Dr. King is exciting and energetic. Each classroom had a chance to highlight their hard work and creativity; we enjoyed singing, dancing and drama, and Ms. Maryamu acted as emcee. The classroom of Ms. Andria prepared “I Have A Dream” Speeches and read them using a microphone. For a selection of photos and writing from the party, visit our Photo Page.

Humane Society Event

Providing education, basic services and therapy to our young clients are the core of services that First Place provides. We also hope that they will learn to be adults who are committed to community service. This year, the 5th graders of the K-Kids (a group of student leaders sponsored by the Kiwanis Club) have chosen the Humane Society of King County to be the site of their community service.

Our county Humane Society, located in Bellevue, was visited by the K-Kids and Ms. Irene, Ms. Jaime and Ms. Cato. The K-Kids toured the facility, met the animals that were in need of homes, and asked questions regarding the organization and its procedures. The staff of the facility report the First Place students to be well-spoken, and were impressed by the breadth and depth of their questions.

As with all children, our students felt a great deal of empathy for the creatures at BHS. However, the K-Kids of Ms. Irene’s class may have felt a special connection to these animals—cats and dogs must sometimes go through difficult transitions, just like human beings. Their life experiences have given them an awareness of the intense difficulties of being in crisis.

The children have decided to bake dog and cat treats for the animals and to knit blankets for them during their after school knitting club. We are so very proud of our creative and compassionate students!
